About halfway between Woodinville and Monroe on Highway 522, is a course that’s been a favorite of mine for quite some time. It’s tough to describe, because nothing about the course is exceptional. The design is pretty ho-hum, the condition is merely…good. The customer service and the friendliness of the staff, however, is second to none.
Another Oki course, Echo Falls isn’t going to knock your socks off for the first 16 holes. A parade of straight and short par 4’s and 5’s is in your immediate future. Some decent elevation change is present, and there are some good risk/reward opportunities, like the very drive-able par 4 3rd. But nothing is really great. The par 3’s are all fairly long, challenging and well bunkered; except the ridiculous 10th hole. It’s a 100 yard monstrosity that even the worst of duffers can manage par on.
About the 15th hole, you’ll be dreaming of the dram you’ll be enjoying after the round. At 16, you play another short, dogleg par 4. But leaving this hole, you get a tingly feeling that you only get at a hand full of courses. The 17th hole is one of the hardest in the state, without a doubt. It features a 30-40 yard wide fairway, with water all the way right and OB all the way left. A dead center, 260 yard drive will leave you with a 150 yard iron into an oblong green that is all carry over the pond. The green features some deep surrounding bunkers and tough undulation. Having to lay up on a Par 4 after a mega drive is a very humbling experience. It will test your character, which is what makes the placement of the 18th hole such a test. The picturesque 18th hole is around 150 yards into an island green. The green is big and accepting, but after putting two in the water on 17, it shrinks immensely.
All-in-all, the final two holes and the service make this course more than worth the $70 prime time weekend (riding, it’s $58 walking) price tag. If you can wait until 3pm, the price drops to a very reasonable $48 with a cart on a weekend. The greens role nice, the fairways are clean; but the short length will make this course a long play. My round took nearly 6 hours on a Friday, so I have to ding some points.
Final Score: 43/60.
